Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a specific form of chronic, progressive fibrosing interstitial pneumonia of unknown cause, primarily affecting older adults. The disease is characterized by the thickening and progressive fibrosis of lung parenchyma, leading to a decline in lung function and eventually respiratory failure, and death.
