Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) caused approximately 800,000 deaths in 2015 worldwide among children aged ≤19 years, second only to neonatal/preterm birth complications. Mortality is higher in countries with low socioeconomic status, as it increases up to 15% during the respiratory virus season. Viral pneumonia is more common during colder months and is influenced by environmental factors and human behavioral patterns. Risk factors include crowded family structures, exposure to cigarette smoke, and substance abuse.
