Acute rhinosinusitis is usually caused by bacterial or viral infections after a cold and symptoms include nasal congestion, facial pain, headache, nasal discharge and loss of smell. Chronic rhinosinusitis is characterised by recurrent infections lasting longer than 12 weeks.
