Acute tonsillopharyngitis is an acute infection of the pharynx, tonsilla palatina or both characterized by erythema, exudation or membrane. Acute tonsillopharyngitis, which presents with sore throat, is more commonly seen in children with the clinical picture of tonsillitis. Transmission is easier and more frequent in areas such as collective living places, schools, kindergartens and dormitories. Although many bacterial and viral agents cause tonsillopharyngitis, viruses are the most common agents. When bacterial tonsillitis is not treated or inadequate antibiotherapy is applied, life-threatening suppurative and non-suppurative complications may occur.
